Edna Sperry

Edna Johnson Sperry October 21, 1905 – February 10, 2007 Passed away peacefully on February 10th in Stockton at the age of 101. Edna was born and raised in Sacramento. She graduated from Stanford University in 1928 and enjoyed a long and happy marriage to Willard C. Sperry, a high school friend and Stanford classmate.

They raised their family in Elk Grove, where Mr. Sperry owned the Ford automobile dealership for many years. Edna’s family and friends will remember her as a wonderful role model who possessed an insatiable desire to learn, a keen wit, and an ever-present twinkle in her eye. While she considered her role of wife and mother to be of primary importance, she was a tireless volunteer on behalf of organizations including Elk Grove schools, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Brownie Scouts and Girl Scouts, and Stanford Women’s Club of San Joaquin County.

In recognition of the many ways she shared her time and talents on behalf of others, in 1962 Edna was named Elk Grove’s first female citizen of the year. She was a charter member of the Elk Grove Book Club in 1937, which is still in existence, enjoyed library work, and had a lifelong love of golf. Widowed in 1982, she is survived by three devoted children, Willard (JoAnne) of Anghiari, Italy, David (Gale) of Los Altos, and Marion (James) Robertson of San Francisco; five grandchildren, Will, Kurt, Rob, Laura, and Alex; and four great-grandsons.
